EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

W

hile I consider myself fortunate to have grown up during a pretechnology era when bruised knees, bikes and building huts in the backyard were the status quo, I also spent a lot of time watching The Wizard of Oz on repeat. There was something particularly comforting and relatable about each of the characters, each on their own journey of self-discovery. There was a sentiment in the lm, that for me, while inevitably clichĂŠ, has become relevant to me now more than ever before. There s no place like home . Having spent many months overseas in the past several years (of course keeping a watchful eye on the city I ve called home since birth), I have been blessed to experience some of the greatest wonders in the world. From the Great Wall of China to the Taj Mahal in India, I have had the fortune of basking in the glow of their incredible beauty and history. Yet during every experience I have pursued, or serendipitously fallen into overseas, there has been one prevailing emotion that stayed with me. Homesickness. It has only been through leaving and returning, getting a taste of the impressive evolution of our generous little city that I have come to fully appreciate that home is so much more than where the heart is. To my mind, it is what de nes you, playing an instrumental role in how you think, feel, and relate to the world. Through my travels overseas, I have become even more passionate about Christchurch, wider Canterbury and New Zealand as a nation. From our truly unique flora and fauna and the delicious taste of our water (for the most part!), to that No. 8 wire mentality that has rmly cemented us as a highly respected and competitive player on the world stage. I am a great believer that we have a remarkable mix of natural, social, environmental, recreational and professional assets that set us apart. It is with a renewed sense of patriotism, ready to settle and soak up what Christchurch is now and promises to be, that I take on the role as the new permanent Editor of Metropol Magazine. I am immeasurably grateful to be embarking on my new chapter in life helping to lead Metropol, ensuring that it continues to ful l its potential. My hope is that with every magazine we put together with you in mind, you turn each page feeling exactly the way I do now excited, full of hope, and reminded that there truly is no place like home .

TWANG, SLIDE AND CROON The Listener said Eb & Sparrow “bring Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas twang, slide, croon and growl to the Kiwi heartland”. Cantabrians can now hear it for themselves, with the five-piece band from Wellington kicking off the 2016 Gloucester Room Sessions season at the Isaac Theatre Royal later this month.

eaturing pastoral, expansive ballads, rollicking good-time songs and a few memorable torchburners, Eb & Sparrow is led by Ebony Lamb. The band is fast cementing its reputation as one of the most cuttingedge Kiwi country groups around. It has opened for international acts and performed alongside local legends including Marlon Williams, Delaney Davidson, The Eastern and The Warratahs – and is noted for its storytelling as much as Ebony's poignant vocals. As well as The Listener, the band has garnered some excellent reviews from the

A NZ Herald reviewer commented that “Eb & Sparrow is a honeyed, smoky, foot-tappin' treat for the ears … the five-piece lay down wholehearted, deep-hued, visceral tales … with such beautiful warmth and fragility you're hooked from the first glide of lap steel to the last soaring, vocal phrase.” Eb & Sparrow is touring for the first time with Arts On Tour New Zealand (AOTNZ), which organises tours of Kiwi performers to rural and smaller centres in

It liaises with local arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to bring the best of musical and other talent to country districts. French chamber music with ‘joie de vivre’ is the theme of Les Bons Vivants, a Christopher’s Classics performance on Thursday 17 March.

he first concert in the series for 2016, it features Principal Harpist with the CSO (Christchurch Symphony Orchestra) Helen Webby. She is well-known throughout New Zealand as a recitalist: solo, chamber and concerto soloist. She also toured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to Europe in 2010. Interestingly, Helen performs on a concert harp built of New Zealand red beech by her brother, Kim Webby. For Les Bons Vivants, Helen has assembled four of her CSO colleagues to join her: Amandine Guerin – First Violin; Serenity Thurlow – Principal Viola; Tomas Hurnik – Associate Principal Cello; and Anthony Ferner – Principal Flute. The Christopher’s Classics programme, founded by Christopher Marshall and now in its 22nd year, has become a mainstay of the Christchurch chamber music scene. It consists of five concerts a year and showcases some of New Zealand’s finest musicians. Following Les Bons Vivants, the programme features Michael Houstoun (21 April); New Zealand String Quartet with pianist Stephen Le Pledge (17 August); Amici Ensemble (5 October); and Affetto (20 October).

Q & A

What is the most challenging aspect of your job? Managing such an extensive portfolio and various business ventures outside of Redesign, there are many, many challenges. As we cover many time zones, my day starts somewhere between 5am and 6am and the last call will be usually around 10pm. Achieving balance and prioritysetting are the greatest challenges. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? The ability to work on high-profile projects around the globe; our associations with Indian government and political agencies and high-level Sheikhs in the Middle East; moving into new emerging countries like Myanmar, Vietnam and China; and providing my staff with opportunities within New Zealand and beyond.

“ Q & A

Q & A

Q & A

What do you enjoy most about working in Asia and the Middle East? I love the people, I love the food, I love talking business and developing relationships. I also really like that as New Zealanders we are well respected wherever we go, and there’s never a bad word to be said about our dealings. If I had a rupee for every person that asked me to help them come to New Zealand, I would be a very rich woman! How do you navigate the cultural expectations being a woman in business in the Middle East? We dress in our abayas, respect the cultures, abide by the rules and do the work set out for us. Like I always say, ‘be good at what you do and the clients will have respect’.

Q & A

I am a very driven and methodical person. I make informed decisions and think very carefully before making my move.

What is the secret to your success? I am a very driven and methodical person. I make informed decisions and think very carefully before making my move. Our place in the design market is a combination of awardwinning design, repeat business, professional management and effective design systems, and we manage expectations and deliver what we promise, which is very much our core strength. How does your company set itself apart from others? We offer a service and style that is very different to other design companies, and one that is distinct within the markets in which we work. We have tapped into a niche market of retail, food and beverage within the airport sector and offer clients the complete package, from conception to construction. Where do you find your greatest source of support as a woman in business in the global market? Being selected for the 2015 EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women Asia Pacific Program was an incredible experience. It gave me the opportunity to meet like-minded and influential dynamic businesswomen who have given me an amazing amount of support. What are the three key factors that have contributed to Redesign’s phenomenal success? Professionalism, presence (within the markets in which you work), and calculated risk. Know your business, know your markets, know your end strategy and always plan ahead.

Q & A

Q & A Q & A

What other projects outside of Redesign do you have on the horizon? I’m currently working on a food and beverage concept being developed in Uzbekistan and the wider Middle East that could potentially be introduced into New Zealand malls, but the next venture due to launch is an onlineonly design company. It’s very exciting as it’s completely new to the market and the world at large. How do you achieve the often precarious work/life balance? My work is pretty intense, but I’m fortunate enough to have two wonderful teenage children who are extremely supportive and know how hard I work for them, as I do for all my staff too. What do you love most about living in Christchurch? Now that we’re seeing a lot of new buildings popping up, I’m looking forward to being a part of the rebuild. These are exciting times that present a great opportunity for us to have a truly unique and design-focused city.

THE TALE OF A VERY SICK PUP

As the weekend passed he began to improve - his temperature dropped, his breathing improved and his appetite returned.

Richard Lucy, a veterinarian and ultrasonographer at Ourvets in St Albans, shares his experience of caring for Honey, a very sick little pup:

T

he lunchtime flight from Queenstown arrived in Christchurch with some very precious cargo. Honey, a 10 week-old Golden Labrador pup, was an emergency patient suffering from a life-threatening condition – a pyothorax. His chest cavity was full of pus and without treatment he would soon die. The Queenstown vets had initially stabilised him before flying him to us for further diagnosis and treatment. Honey was a very sad and sick little boy, with a high temperature and laboured breathing on arrival. We immediately began emergency treatment - starting him

on oxygen, triple-therapy antibiotics, intravenous fluids and draining his chest. We removed 120mls of blood-stained pus and some air from his chest cavity, resulting in an immediate improvement in his breathing. We began lavaging his chest, instilling warmed sterile saline to wash out the clots of pus from his chest cavity. His X-rays from Central Otago revealed a strange white fluffy region that we were concerned about, but how to further determine the importance of this? Was it an infection, a twisted lung lobe or even a cancer? Honey was too sick to sedate to do a CT scan, so we opted for an ultrasound scan of his chest. The procedure is painless Honey just lay on a big fluffy blanket while we performed the scan. The abnormal area on the X-ray was located, and under ultrasound guidance, I very carefully introduced a needle through his chest wall

into the area and removed some cells to send to the Veterinary Laboratory at Massey University. Then all we could do was wait for the results to come back from the laboratory on Monday. Honey required round-the-clock monitoring, chest drainage, intravenous fluids, oxygen and medications, as he was such a sick wee pup. We transferred him to the After Hours Veterinary Centre for the first two nights where their dedicated team could look after him overnight, returning him to us each morning. As the weekend passed, he began to improve his temperature dropped, his breathing improved and his appetite returned. The amount of pus that we were draining from his chest was also greatly reducing. Contact Ourvets on www.ourvets.co.nz to find your nearest clinic, and follow the rest of Honey's recovery in Ourvets’ next editorial.

HADLOW HOLDS COURT IN DARK TRAGEDY Former Cantabrian Mark Hadlow has returned to his old stomping ground to play the lead role in The Court Theatre's Macbeth.

T

he contemporary, urban staging of Macbeth, Shakespeare's dark tragedy, opened recently. Artistic Director of The Court and director of Macbeth, Ross Gumbley, has long wanted to stage the play “in a society that has been ravaged by conflict in a long civil war and infused with the sort of images we have seen in recent history in Eastern Europe and the Middle East”. Gumbley firmly believes that the story of a decorated general who seizes power and then destroys all threats to his authority is starkly relevant. “Macbeth is almost a 'how-to' playbook for dictators,” says Gumbley. “Rulers like Stalin and Gaddafi; countries like Syria and Chechnya — the pattern of someone assuming control and transforming into a tyrant has echoed through history. “The play is a fascinating study of selfcorruption. Once you give yourself license to act on your darkest impulses, where — and how — does it end? Macbeth gives himself that license and as a result his internal conflict is the heart of this tragedy. He's an incredibly imaginative character, so when he surrenders to his dark thoughts we see up close the toll it takes,” explains Gumbley. 14 March 10, 2016 Metropol

Casting Hadlow, as well as Lara Macgregor as Lady Macbeth, was the key. “With Mark as Macbeth, you see a man for whom murder is his last roll of the dice to be King,” says Gumbley. “The best part for us is that Mark's abilities only get better with age. He can convey the danger and power of Macbeth while simultaneously deeply invoking the audience's sympathy.” Macgregor, former Artistic Director of the Fortune Theatre, recently directed The Court season of Winston's Birthday and last performed with Hadlow at The Court as a married couple in When the Rain Stops Falling. Having also played a couple in Gods of Carnage, Gumbley felt the actors' chemistry would be perfectly harnessed in the lead roles in Macbeth. With the leads and creative vision secure, the remainder of the cast fell into place, with Gumbley assembling “a strata of mature actors with a wonderful blend of young actors coming in that gives this production a fantastic energy”. Numerous actors return to The Court for Macbeth, including Owen Black (who played Malcolm almost 20 years earlier, now playing Macduff); Michael Keir Morrissey; and Adam Brookfield. Tom Peters (with numerous UK stage roles under his belt) as Macbeth's best friend and comrade Banquo; and New Zealandborn Raewyn Lippert (Game of Thrones, Call the Midwife and Suffragettes) as one of the witches who prophesy Macbeth's ascension. “When you delve into Macbeth you unlock doors that lead to other doors, and that's one reason it's Shakespeare's most popularly-produced play – it constantly reinvents itself with each production,” says Gumbley. “Four hundred years on, Macbeth still feels like it was written for today.” To book tickets, phone 963 0870 or visit www.courttheatre.org.nz

A CULTURAL MELTING POT By Hans Petrovic

The wide range of quality wining and dining, nightclubbing, first-rate fashion and home accessory shops to be found in Victoria Street is best typified by the contrast in the two main establishments at either end – Knox Church at the top and Christchurch Casino at the bottom.

“V

ictoria Street is a melting pot. There's fine dining, featuring cuisine from all around the world. It's cheap and cheerful, with good coffee, wine, craft beer, cider and amazing cocktails,” the Regional Manager of Hospitality New Zealand, Amy McLellan-Minty, says. “The street comes alive at the end of the working day, with younger people going there for drinks at container bars, in restaurants and night clubs, and at weekends often staying on into the early hours of the morning. Adding to the fun, the Calendar Girls strip club is to open soon opposite the casino.”

After the earthquakes, many people opening new restaurants and bars there – such as Tequila Mockingbird Restaurant and the Revival Container Bar – were warned against doing so because the future of the street was uncertain. None of them, however, have regretted doing so. Revival has just been expanded into the Little Neighbourhood bar, offering a bigger selection of food. Restaurateur Tony Astle has opened three venues there: The King of Snake, Mexicano's and the accompanying Dirty Lands bar, and Chinwag. Chef Jonny Schwass is now located in the two-storey, weatherboard Harlequin Public House, near the Victoria Clock Tower. On the opposite Salisbury Street corner stands a giant metal gnome outside the Gourmet Hub container restaurant, which serves global food, ranging from Greek skewers to Thai beef salad, Caribbean black fish tacos, Cuban sandwiches, and Portuguese peri-peri chicken. That certainly is a melting pot! Metropol March 10, 2016 17

DOGGED DAMES ENTERTAIN THE RURAL HINTERLAND Working wool sheds in the South Island heartland are set to be transformed into real-life show spaces for an unforgettable night in the country.

Emma Newborn, Mel Parsons, Amelia Dunbar

F

ollowing sell-out tours from the deep south to the far north of New Zealand since 2012, the team behind The Bitches' Box & Mel Parsons are now presenting a brand new double-bill show down on the farm. Sons of a Bitch & Mel Parsons promises an unmissable evening of music, theatre and comedy, complete with BBQ and bar – and all in the comfort of a wool shed.

Emma Newborn, Mel Parsons, Amelia Dunbar From the makers of The Bitches' Box comes a hilarious new show featuring a mob of delightful (and disgusting) dogs. Country bumpkin Amelia Dunbar, who hails from a high-country farm in Canterbury, and Auckland city slicker Emma Newborn once again take to the stage in an attempt to bridge the urban/rural divide the

only way they know how … by playing dogs. Join them as they present their signature, fastpaced, multi-character new show Sons of a Bitch. It's the side-splitting sequel to the five-star gem The Bitches' Box, which was a big hit with audiences from Edendale to Edinburgh, from wool sheds to glittering festivals worldwide. After a huge year in 2015, Canterbury-based Silver Scroll finalist and Fly My Pretties star Mel Parsons presents a new solo show. This follows her critically-acclaimed and award-winning new album, Drylands. With her razor-sharp wit and deft hand on the guitar, Parsons is one of New Zealand's favourite globe-trotting singer-songwriters. She will present a repertoire of new songs – plus a few old favourites – to fall in love with. Travelling by trusty horse truck (and dragging a bar, 200 chairs, stage curtain, props, full production equipment and crew along for the ride), the talented trio will capture audiences once reserved for the likes of the Topp Twins, Fred Dagg and Murray Ball as they take over working wool sheds throughout the South Island and turn them in to stages to showcase their talents. Each show will be preceded by a fundraiser BBQ run by the local school or community group. A cash bar serving beer and Allan Scott wines will also be open throughout the evening. Due to shed sizes, tickets are very limited for each show. Book online at www.eventfinda.co.nz to avoid missing out. Tickets are already selling fast, and it is unlikely there will be door sales.

OUT & ABOUT

FROM TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH

It is one of the most significant success stories of Christchurch's post-quake recovery.

What began as a chapter to be added to The Theatre Royal, Christchurch: An Illustrated History, published in 2008, became a story that needed to be told more fully – chronicling the repair, rebuild and restoration of the theatre, and the people involved.

R

ecreating the Magic – The rebirth of a Christchurch theatre was written by Anna Crighton, Liz Grant and Ian Lochhead. It tells the story of the restoration and reconstruction of Christchurch's Theatre Royal: from the brink of collapse as a result of earthquake damage in 2011, to its triumphant reopening in November 2014. This is a story of triumph over seemingly impossible odds. It is one of the most significant success stories of Christchurch's post-quake recovery, and an insight into what can be achieved when people are determined to ensure that an important part of their architectural and theatrical heritage will survive. The Chair of the Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation Board, Joy Lady Simpson, summed it up perfectly. “Because of the decisions made, and work performed over a period of more than 100 years,” she said, “we have been able to reclaim a valuable treasure and offer it as a gift to generations that are to come”. One of the book's authors, Dr Anna Crighton, is widely known as a staunch advocate for heritage and cultural values.

She has been a Director of the Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation since 2001. Anna was awarded the Queen's Service Order for Public Service in 2005 and a Civic Award in 2015. Liz Grant is a Lyttelton-based freelance writer and editor with a background in broadcasting. She is the author of four non-fiction books, and from 2008 to 2011, headed the writing team at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Liz was living in Wellington at the time of the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes, but returned to live in Christchurch in August 2011. The third author, Dr Ian Lochhead, is a Christchurch architectural historian. He contributed a chapter to the Theatre Royal's centennial history in 2008 and has also written about Anna Pavlova's 1926 tour of New Zealand. Recreating the Magic – The rebirth of a Christchurch theatre was released on the fifth anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake (Monday 22 February). It is available from the Isaac Theatre Royal Box Office, 145 Gloucester Street, or online at www.isaactheatreroyal.co.nz Metropol March 10, 2016 21

IN THE CITY WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFES WHAT’S NEW ART RETAIL DOWNTOWN

REGENERATION IS HAPPENING AT PACE

The ongoing development of our city has been called many things: the rebuild; a rebirth; regeneration. One thing we can all agree on, is that the face of Christchurch is changing at a rapid pace. Yes, there's certainly a lot going on in our central city, so let's take a look at where some of our key developments are at.

Kiwibank returns to CBD

The Crossing taking shape

Local property investor, Craig Nicholas, is developing a new $14 million stand-alone building at 664/668 Colombo Street. This will be the new inner-city home of Kiwibank. Plans for the new Wilson & Hill Architects-designed complex are expected to be lodged for building consent in the next three months and the contracted target completion date is 31 May, 2017.

Philip Carter's Crossing redevelopment is now well underway, with the steel framework for its 600-plus carpark building showing. Due for completion in early 2017, the precinct will feature office floors at either end, separated by hospitality. It will link to Ballantynes department store via the existing air bridge to the west, and to The Crossing car park to the south.

New $72 million health facility The Government has committed to the development of a $72 million outpatients facility to be built in the Health Precinct on St Andrew's triangle, directly opposite Christchurch Hospital. Spanning five storeys and 10,500m2; the new building will provide outpatient and a range of other clinical services.

The Terrace making great progress Antony Gough's famed development ‘The Terrace’ is flying along, with the central Oxford Terrace buildings built and external wall claddings now being installed. Foundations for the office building on the corner at Cashel and Oxford Terrace have just been finished. The five-storey office building on Hereford Street will be fully framed before Christmas. Stage One, facing the Avon River, will open in mid-2016 to coincide with the completion of this part of the Avon River Precinct.

East Frame kicks off soon By October, Fletcher Residential will start work on the East and North Frame development, which will feature nearly 1000 townhouses. The final area is due to be fully completed by mid2024. The $800 million project will also see the former Orion building on Armagh Street developed into a retail and hospitality complex by February 2020.

PwC Centre prepares for 2016 opening Opposite the Bridge of Remembrance, local builder/developer Armitage Williams Construction is pressing ahead with its prime, $60 million, riverside office building. Construction of the five-storey building, known as The PwC Centre, started in late 2014 and PwC expects to move from its temporary accommodation in Burnside late this year.

KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE WITH A MUCH-IMPROVED SCIENCE CENTRE It was a much-loved central-city attraction for 14 years and now Science Alive! is going to be bigger and better than ever before, thanks to the development of a new $50 million international science centre within the central city.

T

he not-for-profit organisation has purchased the Durham St court house site from Ngāi Tahu Property and, once existing occupant the Ministry of Justice moves to the Government's new Justice Precinct in late 2017, development can begin. Dedicated to teaching the younger generation about science through a

hands-on approach, the organisation will be incorporating more adult-focused exhibits because space at the new 5500 squaremetre centre is twice that of its former Moorhouse Avenue base. New features will include an earthquake gallery using 3D technology and a 100-seat, full-dome 3D theatre, which would also be used as a planetarium.

The first stage, including the dome theatre, is expected to open in early 2018. Other stages are expected to open later that year depending on funding. The science centre will not fill all the buildings in the complex, with about 7100 square metres being leased out for commercial purposes. The trust board already has $40 million from its reserves, insurance proceeds and a bank loan to contribute to the development, and plans to raise another $10 million. The project is in good hands, with awardwinning Te Papa Museum architect, Pete Bossley, leading the charge alongside Canterbury architect Cymon Allfrey.

MAKE IT MUSTARD By Kate Pierson

Mustard: yes, it's a smack-in-the-face flavour to those with more of a precious palate, but befriended just as quickly by those who like a little fire in their bellies. All in all, the love-hate relationships the flavour gets itself into aren't dissimilar to how people feel about the colour too.

ith that said, its aesthetic popularity is, in fact, steadily on the rise, and has been for some time – a mean feat in itself given the perpetual disorientation of the fashion industry. Sibling to the colour yellow, you'd be pleasantly surprised how easily it becomes that perfect pop of colour to an otherwise vanilla get-up, or a fun way to flirt with colour blocking. Don't despair if you require a bit more hand-holding for your foray into wearing mustard. Top-10 lists courtesy of the oracle of all knowledge – Google – are honouring

mustard as their heroine for the style season. Proffering its role as the 'go to' look for feminine frocks and finery, they're also giving a firm helping hand on all fashion fronts to avoid any faux pas, given mustard is a bold deviation from the status quo. Canterbury retailers are bravely following suit, courting the colour mustard in every form, from shoes to shirts. Some of our favourite little numbers for this summer and heading into autumn were found at the eternally chic Ruby Boutique. Check them out online, or in stores dotted around Christchurch.

tyle and Harmony is selective about the collections it stock and, as such, is a destination location well worth exploring. One of its top priorities is to support local designers and brands, and another is to offer a place where individuals can create their own unique look that sets them apart from the crowd. As a result, it is the only store in the South Island to stock new Christchurch label, Seeking Lola, and the only boutique in New Zealand to offer the full collection by Art Style. These locally designed labels use the finest textiles in offering designs and cuts that transcend seasons and appeal to a number of personalities and

body shapes (coming in sizes 8-18). The creations are feminine, functional and contemporary, and look as good dressed up as they do down. Owner Angela Minson has cleverly created a place where the modern woman can source clothing that reflects her individual style and enables her to ease effortlessly from the office to running errands at home. THE PATH TO CUSTOM TATTOOS By Lydia Truesdale

Tucked away on a side street in Addington is a little tattoo studio with a big following, Left Hand Path Tattoos.

S

ince opening in 2002, Left Hand Path Tattoos has specialised in custom tattoo design with a focus on cleanliness and customer care. It operates slightly differently than your average tattoo studio in that it rarely inks a design that hasn't been custom-created for the client by one of the artists, and it goes beyond standard industry practices to ensure the highest possible level of sanitisation and sterilisation. There are no flash albums in this studio - rather individuals sit down for a relaxed consultation to discuss the space and

type of design they are thinking of inking before being referred to the artist best suited to creating a completely personalised illustration exclusive to that individual. Owner Andrew Swarbrick heads the team of six award-winning artists who each excel in their dedicated genres and together cover a range of specialities, from colourism and surrealism to portraits, neo and traditional Japanese, Maori, New School and more. Every artist has a vast portfolio of experience as well as a bloodborne pathogen qualification, so you

know you're in good hands. The professionalism and creative vision of the artists is unparalleled. And when I say artists, I don't just mean tattoo artists – decorating the walls are variations of original artworks and prints available for purchase. Their enthusiasm for their artistry is unmistakable, and, quite simply, produces results that exceed customer expectations. hether you’re an active person wanting ultimate joints and muscles recovery from training or competition, or someone who wants to keep your joints and muscles in their best condition and support comfort, a combination of turmeric and magnesium is worth a test run! Turmeric has long been known as a yellow cooking spice but, in its stronger form, it is much more. This potent antioxidant helps to This potent antioxidant protect cells from free-radical helps to protect cells from damage. free-radical damage. Curcumin is the orange pigment in turmeric. It supports joints and muscles, cardiovascular function, digestive health and even youthful, radiant skin. Researchers recognise its powerful activity and interaction within the body. Unfortunately, curcumin in its natural state is poorly absorbed. Meriva offers a patented delivery form of curcumin, where curcumin is attached to phospholipids. This process has been shown to improve the bioavailability of curcumin – the body can readily absorb curcumin phospholipid complex, resulting in more curcumin reaching the cells. A renowned mineral for healthy joints and movement is magnesium. Without magnesium we could not produce energy, so our muscles would be permanently in a state of contraction; hence magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer. Physical and mental stress depletes the body's magnesium levels, so adding magnesium in times of stress can effectively support the body's recovery. HOT LOOKS for COOLER DAYS Rouche: Ketze-ke cardigan

here is a great selection of smart and stylish blazers for the coming season. These are perfect to wear over your summer dress, or with skirts and long pants. Opt for basic blacks or monochrome, doublebreasted with feature buttons, or new season's prints. For a more casual look, add softer layers with cardigans – long and loose or shorter draped styles – which are a great fit with all your summer wear. Or try something a little different with an over-sized cape. Warmer fabrics of suede and suede-look make their mark for autumn, in natural shades of army and tan. Look for long-line shirts that can be worn open as jackets, skirts either mini or mid-length in flattering pencil cuts, and suede-fronted tees and tunics. Change your strappy sandals for footwear with more cover. Punched leather shoes in white, blush and metallics work well across the seasons, or shoes in traditional Oxford style and statement loafers in black suede with cut-outs and tiny studding. And, for the evening, you can't go past patent shoes in shiny grey, navy or black, with heels either high or low.

I

n the spirit of continuing to push the style boundaries, we think the globally resonant look of distressed denim, AKA ripped jeans, remains very much on point for autumn. If you're brave enough to bare some skin, it's pretty much the only occasion where looking distressed is A-OK – pun fully intended! It's the versatility of the trend that gives it that special something, with distressed denim the perfect companion for most looks from top to toe. Think ripped jeans paired with basics and ballet flats, with a pair of heels in your handbag easily transforming the look from day to night. Their generous nature means the jeans will adapt to the seasons, so you'll find they become one of your most beloved wardrobe staples and an easy 'go to' for a look that never fails to give you that ‘X factor’. The top tip from us? If you find a pair that fit you like a glove, treat yourselves to more than one, as great jeans can be hard to come by.

RAKAHURI RAGE RETURNS BIGGER AND BETTER

The Rakahuri Rage returns to Rangiora for its second year at 10am on Sunday 20 March 2016.

I

t's a great day out for competing cyclists and spectators alike with a chance to enjoy some action-packed adventure in the beautiful North Canterbury countryside. ‘The Rage' is a team race challenging riders to complete as many laps as possible in six hours around an 8km course. Starting at Rangiora Racecourse, it winds its way through dappled light forest, onto bumpy tracks and along stopbanks near the Ashley River. It's fast-paced, furious and it's great to fun watch. Last year, 88 teams took part and the organisers are expecting to top that this time with new categories including a junior category (12-17 year olds) and a primary school category (for year eight students). Dress-ups are also encouraged with some special prizes up for grabs for the best costumes. All the proceeds from the race are going towards the MainPower Primary School Swimming Programme, which provides students Years Two to Eight with 10 swimming lessons for just $10 per student.

25% OFF COTTON NIGHTIES

Around 40 percent of the track runs along the stopbank so there are plenty of spaces to get a good view. There will be food and coffee stalls at the Rangiora Racecourse starting point. Alternatively, visitors can head into the nearby town of Rangiora, which has an excellent choice of cafes. For further information on events in the area, visit www.visitwaimakariri.co.nz

INSPIRING INK By Lydia Truesdale

One of the most important factors to consider when contemplating a tattoo is the care that will be taken and the quality end result because of it.

F

or more than one year now, NZ Ink Tattoo Studio in Rangiora - formerly under a different name for the prior three and a half years - has been North Canterbury's port of call for superior freehand and custom designs. “It is our duty to make our clients' time with us a truly enjoyable experience and to make them feel comfortable and at ease, as getting a tattoo can be quite an intimate experience,” says Trudi, the friendly face at the front desk who keeps things running smoothly. NZ Ink's professional and highly hygienic studio produces an exceptional standard of customer service. It believes that quality work shouldn't cost the earth, so it begins by conducting a consultation to get an idea of what, exactly, to custom-create for the individual. The small, friendly and family-oriented team is comprised of Trudi, who does “everything but tattoo”, Head Artist and Owner, Steve Purtle, and apprentice Jono. Steve, who is art-school qualified and has over 15 years' experience, has found his niche in drawing freehand on skin as a way to give clients a feel for what their art will look like, before tattooing from there. Steve's favourite genres are Bio Mechanical, Celtic, Geometric, Fantasy Art, Black and Grey and anything intricate, but as an accomplished artist, he can cover most genres. He relishes getting to indulge in his passion every day – not just tattooing but also drawing and painting – and takes great pride in seeing customers' joy with their new ink. At Anstice & Associates Optometrists Schoolvision principles are practised, using speci c techniques to uncover the hidden visual instabilities that can reduce a child's learning ability at school.

E

ducating parents and teachers about the link between vision and associated reading, tracking, concentration and processing di culties at school is gaining traction. This understanding is critical in the step to identifying the children at school who need to have their eyes tested. We are all too quick to assume that if a child can see well, that means their visual system is working normally. This 'myth' is the biggest barrier in having parents take the rst step to having their child assessed. Children need much more than just a general eye test to uncover any visual issues linked to learning di culties. The

Anstice Schoolvision principles identify the root cause of eye muscular instability in order to speci cally target the area for improvement. A specialised spectacle correction is worn mainly for classroom work and for close work at home. The specialist prescription required trains the visual system how to focus and co-ordinate accurately. The specialised spectacle correction also builds muscle memory with diligent wear over time. Dharshie Hughes and Jeremy Fox, directors of Anstice & Associates Optometrists, are passionate about helping children reach their full potential academically. PIONEERING MODERN MEDICINE Southern Trials Group Ltd (SCTG) was established in 2007. Based in Christchurch, co-owners Doctor Simon Carson and Julia Mathieson have many years of experience in clinical trials management. There are now three branches in Christchurch, SCT Beckenham, SCT Riccarton and SCT Shirley, and two sites in Auckland.

D

r Carson explains that no drug or vaccine can get to the market without going through a clinical trial. “Right now at Southern Clinical Trials Group we are recruiting for trials for drugs to treat osteoarthritis, asthma, raised lipids and psoriasis,” Dr Carson says as he outlines exactly what clinical trials are intended to do: Clinical trials are a key research tool for advancing medical knowledge and patient care. A clinical trial involves research using human volunteers (also called participants) who receive a specific intervention or treatment according to the research plan or protocol. This protocol sets out in detail the process and design of the study, the treatment to be used, and the measurements that will be required.

CLINICAL TRIALS ARE A KEY RESEARCH TOOL FOR ADVANCING MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE AND PATIENT CARE All parties (investigators, study coordinators and pharmaceutical company employees) involved with the development and testing of the study medicine must follow the study protocol and a specific set of international guidelines called Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Participants who volunteer for a trial are advised beforehand of possible risks. Before a clinical trial can begin for a treatment, medication or device, it must show promising results in laboratory or animal tests. At the beginning of a clinical trial, a team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals checks the health of the participant and gives specific instructions for using the treatment, medication or device throughout the trial.

USUALLY, TWO SUCCESSFUL TRIALS ARE REQUIRED BEFORE A DRUG OR TREATMENT IS APPROVED BY THE FDA.

The team monitors the participant as the trial progresses. Are clinical trials safe? For the most part _ yes. However, sometimes clinical trials are for experimental medications intended for very sick people, so in those cases, there are generally more risks involved. The participant will always be advised of the risks involved. Who can take part in a clinical trial? All clinical trials have guidelines about who can participate. Criteria may include

age, gender, the type and stage of a disease, previous treatment history and other medical conditions. Can a participant quit after a clinical trial starts? Yes, they can pull out at any time. What are the different stages (phases) of clinical trials? To be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an experimental drug or treatment has to pass through several phases of clinical trials: Phase I Trials - test an experimental drug or treatment in a small group of people (20-80) for the first time to evaluate its safety and identify side effects. Phase II Trials - after safety has been confirmed, Phase II trials test the experimental drug or treatment in a larger group of people (100-300). Phase III Trials - test the experimental drug or treatment in a large group of people (1000-3000) to confirm its effectiveness. Usually, two successful trials are required before a drug or treatment is approved by the FDA. Phase IV Trials - acquire additional information about an experimental drug or treatment after it has been approved. SEASONAL CUISINE, SWEET TUNES With a sunny courtyard outside, Mumbles Café in Hanmer Springs is a happy and congenial place to watch the world go by.

O

wner, Cheryl Murray, has had the business for 16 months yet the building has been a café for more than 20 years. The business continues to make great coffees, counter food, all day breakfasts, soups and pizzas. It's open from 7.30am every morning except for Thursdays; the café is brimming with tourists and locals alike enjoying the simple but delicious menu, a smoothie, or their daily latté. “It's a great place to pick up a healthy take-out lunch to take up the mountain in the winter or for summer hiking,” Cheryl adds. The café seats up to 90-100 people, with both indoor and outdoor choices sharing the courtyard with food establishments on either side. At the moment the menu is summer-orientated, with all day breakfasts. Pizza choices are substantial and hot winter soups and chowders are added when it starts cooling down.

Buskers entertain guests while they enjoy a coffee or lunch in the treelined courtyard.

Cheryl loves the fact that buskers entertain her guests while they enjoy a coffee or lunch in the tree-lined courtyard and, with the local weekend market and events, there's always plenty on. Hanmer Springs swells to full capacity on weekends, so it's a good idea to be an early-bird if you want to sit and enjoy a long breakfast. Mumbles Café is located at 6 Conical Hill Rd, Hurunui. CANTERBURY BRIDE

STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES By Kate Pierson

Flower power is reigning supreme for bridal season 2016, so if you've ever contemplated fashionably turning your back on the traditional bouquet or veil, now's the time.

F

rom wild flowers delicately woven through fishtail braids, to elfin-like flower garlands sitting atop wavy tresses evocative of bygone bohemian eras, there is a bit of somethin'-somethin' for every bride keen to experiment with her look. Flowers in your hair are the perfect compromise if you want to take a conservative step away from convention while remaining in the style comfort zone. Take inspiration from bridal books, Pinterest, your own garden and the wild environment around you. And, if you're adventurous enough, DIY it and fashion your own look for you and your bridesmaids. If you'd like a little or a lot of help from the flower experts, Aromaunga Flowers at The Tannery is the perfect companion for you on the journey to finding your flower fit. According to one of their experts: “Flower garlands are very much in vogue at present for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls, sometimes taking the place of the classic wedding bouquet. Whether the bride's choice is for fine and delicate or a bold, bright, full statement, they always make for a beautiful accompaniment to a bride's outfit.”

LESS IS MORE

Design your dream ring

By Kate Pierson

There's a confident statement being made by many blushing brides this season. It is quite simply, but compellingly, 'less is

W

absolutely more' when it comes to the dress they're donning on their special day.

W

ith brides stylishly reinventing the definition of simplicity as they bask in their matrimonial glow, the options have infinitely diversified. From short hems to eclectic fabrics, the previously unyielding notion that brides need to be decked out in lace and embellishments from head to toe has most definitely been given the boot – although, of course, the traditional bridal attire is still very much on the style scene, graciously sharing the stage with its more relaxed counterparts. With the prospect of offering a stylish cost-saver and an option that effortlessly graduates from day to evening wedding wear, the informal or semi-formal bridal dress takes functional beauty to a whole new level.

LETTING THE CREATIVE JUICES RUN WILD By Cynthia Kepple

The last Monday of the month is when the chefs come out to play...

T

hese Freestyle Mondays are the brainchild of Jamie Bennett, chef and owner of Town Tonic and Passengers + Co. It's when fellow chefs plus Jamie and crew can let their imagination and creative juices run wild, interact and have fun. “Freestyle is the theme; food is the focus; open minds are all accepted; and camaraderie is the goal,” he says. Started in the middle of 2015, Freestyle Mondays have seen some of the city's most innovative and adventurous chefs let loose in this open kitchen, with Kane Bamberry from Roots kicking off the fun. Themes are as diverse as the chefs themselves, from free-range chef Alex Davies, formerly of Shop Eight, who is now vegan; to Gilles Thebault, baker extraordinaire from Le Boulangerie, who is also a classic French chef. In February, young chef Finbar, just back from trendsetting Berlin, led the freestylers. “He has travelled the world, dined in many of the top restaurants and cooked in a few as well,” Jamie says. Freestyle Mondays are a chance to show people new

Topics for the future are likely to be quite audacious, Jamie hints, with 'No Plates: Served on the Table' one suggestion, while 'Femme Fatale, Our First Lady of Freestyle' will introduce a female chef as team leader. “Creating dishes can be quite emotional,” Jamie confides. “Chefs can be quite drained afterwards.” Freestyle Mondays give them a chance to bounce ideas off each other, and often a dish isn't finished until it hits the plate. At $60 a head for between five and eight courses, plus the entertainment value of watching top chefs at play, Freestyle Mondays are an exciting dining event that lifts the local dining scene out of the ordinary. It's not only the chefs who have to be adventurous!

LOCO WITH THE COCO

By Nicholas Henare

If you like Pina Coladas and being caught in the rain, I'm the man you can turn to for the easy solution to a cocktail on a warm night. Pina Colada means 'strained pineapple' but, from my point of view, it's the coconut component that makes the drink. The drink was invented in Puerto Rico and the bartenders may turn in their graves with my recipe, but here goes.

Ingredients: Ice 3/4 cup of pineapple Peeled lemon 250ml coconut water 1 pot natural Coconut Collaborative yoghurt Fresh pineapple wedges to garnish Method: Combine in a blender and blend until smooth. Stick a straw in, add a pineapple wedge, and soak up the sunshine. If you're feeling adventurous, add a shot of white rum for a tropical evening drink you can enjoy while listening to old songs from the late 1970s.

atisserie Yahagi celebrated its seventh birthday on 4 March, but it is still ‘a hidden gem’ in the city of Christchurch. Located in an old shopping arcade at Church Corner Mall, Upper Riccarton, the only clue to its existence is a tiny sign on Riccarton Road. Most people never suspect that an outstanding patisserie selling delectable cakes and desserts is just steps from the busy traffic. Those who discover Patisserie Yahagi are blown away by the beautiful treats, which are of the standard one would expect to find in the finest European stores. If you eat with your eyes, this is eye candy in its truest sense. There are more than 15 kinds of desserts in the glass cabinets, all made from scratch using the finest ingredients. On the counter are classic French pastries, and the clever and passionate team of patissieres are regularly creating new and seasonal delights. The glistening chocolate mousse, made with the best quality Belgian chocolate, is the best seller. A heart-shaped raspberry and chocolate mousse, introduced as a Valentine’s Day special (gluten free!) is the most recent hit. More than 100 pieces sold in a day. Chefs and gourmets, many of whom have been visiting since the doors opened in 2009, are amazed that this world-class patisserie flourishes in Christchurch in its modest location. But the patisserie’s reputation of making the best cakes and desserts in the country has spread far and wide, and the busy shop attracts customers from as far afield as Auckland and Sydney.

The beautiful treats are of the standard one would expect to find in the finest European stores.

Monkey Spices, the refreshingly different Italian eatery in Rolleston, is approaching its ninth year in business. Long enough to be regarded as a Rolleston icon, say owners Chie and Taka Mochizuki.

S

erving traditional Italian food with an oriental twist, the restaurant is the brainchild of the young couple who hail from Japan but adore Italian food. And it is attracting more and more customers as post-quake Rolleston continues to grow. “We have regulars who have been coming to us from the very beginning, as well as a growing number of new diners,” Chie says. The secret to the Monkey Spices success is the expansive and imaginative menu that caters to all appetites and ages – perfect for everyone, especially families. From tasty tapas to hand-stretched crispy pizzas cooked in the gas-fired pizza oven, to pasta prepared by the Italian chef, substantial mains and delicious desserts, there are a few firm favourites. Like the traditional Japanese dumplings that get the Monkey Spices treatment – unexpected flavours and nontraditional spices and dressings. And the signature dishes: Chinese Salad and Hoajao Crisp Chicken Fettucine. The delicate gnocchi is also

a firm favourite. “Our chef was taught to make gnocchi by his mum and it's just like velvet pillows,” Chie says. While chef Taka works in the kitchen, Chie manages front of house. “Our aim is to make everyone welcome and ensure they are happy,” she says. AN OLYMPIC CULINARY FEAT

By Nicholas Henare

A lucky few were privileged to partake in an exquisite five-course banquet at Visions at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) last month. It was an opportunity for our National Culinary Olympic Team - NZChefs Fonterra - to groom its gastronomic flair in the all-important lead-up to an Olympic event to be held in Erfurt, Germany in October this year.

T

he team consists of Steve Le Corre, John Kelleher, Darren Wright (Chillingworth Road); Mark Sycamore (Tequila Mockingbird); William Mordido, Richard Hingston (Christchurch Casino); Ken O'Connell, Corey Hume, Jie Min Aw and Brian Bae. NZChefs Fonterra is a national association representing professional chefs, cook trainees and confectioners across the country. It is an enviable mix of seasoned chefs and exciting new talent working to create an Olympic menu capturing the essence of New Zealand cuisine using both classic and contemporary methods. Cookbook Author and Chef, Tony Smith, provided a very impressive cervena venison dish at Visions to delight the palate. Grant Watson, Director of Global Foodservice at Fonterra, says “We have some amazing chefs in this country working with unique and innovative techniques and fabulous, fresh ingredients.” The team will travel around New Zealand sharing the experience with as many New Zealanders as it can. It is hoping that up-and-coming chefs might be inspired to participate in the 2020 event. “We've been missing a team for 28 years, so there's a lot riding on this year's team. I think they are out to prove that New Zealand can hold their own. I know they will do well.”

T

here are times when all you want is a simple, healthy meal that is easy to prepare, quick to cook and just plain tasty. In terms of comfort food, the burger never ceases to please the whole family. All you need is fresh, good-quality ingredients and a great burger bun – and you're in business. Here at The Villas, we're serving a delicious BBQ Beef Burger for lunch, made with prime beef mince from Peter Timbs Meats. It is presented in a corn-dusted burger bun with our home-made BBQ sauce, cheese, mesclun salad mix and Emerson's craft beer-battered onion rings. With home-made fries and aioli, you've got a serious burger meal on your hands. Great for the BBQ or to cook on your stove top in a fry pan or griddle, you can really make this recipe your own. For the burger: (makes 4 good-sized patties) 800g prime-quality beef mince (from Peter Timbs Meats if you can) Salt & pepper to taste Your choice of seasoning (a dollop of mustard adds flavour) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 egg (to bind the pattie) Breadcrumbs Method: Mix all ingredients above in a bowl and split into four equal-sized patties. Heat BBQ or fry pan and spray with a little oil. Cook patties on a medium heat until cooked through, turning once. To serve: 4 corn-dusted buns Mesclun salad mix Cheese BBQ Sauce (or your choice of alternative)

Beer-battered onion rings, fries and aioli (optional for you at home) Top each pattie with a slice of cheese a minute or two towards the end of cooking. Meanwhile, take your choice of bun, split it and lightly toast. To serve, add one pattie, sauce of your choice and mesclun. Spike with a bamboo skewer if yours turns out as chunky as ours does. Serve with fries, aioli and beer-battered onion rings if you wish, but pop in to The Villas if you want to try our expert creation for yourself.

ress-up enthusiast Tarina has been with Groovy Costumes for the past three years, and has worked full time since the shop relocated to Cranford Street in August 2013. Brimming with great costume ideas, Tarina and her experienced team are on hand to guide you with your costume choice and can even help you mix and match different elements to create something completely unique.

With the recent increase in costume purchases instead of costume hire for festivals like the Hokitika Food Festival and Seafest, and rugby games, Tarina says the business has recently expanded its retail selection to meet customer demand. “We've found that our customers realise that the likelihood of damage to their costumes is higher than just a regular evening out, so they prefer to buy rather than hire their costumes. That way they can really let their hair down without having to worry about damage costs,” Tarina explains. With an increased focus on costume hire and sales, Groovy Costumes is now clearing all suits from its former hire business. Ex-rental suit stock including ties, shirts and waistcoats is now available at bargain prices. Open Tuesday through Saturday, pop in to 270 Cranford Street or peruse its vast selection of costumes for hire and purchase at www.groovycostumes.co.nz

UP FOR A CHALLENGE By Rachel Smith

A new home in Wigram has brought the Bowers Builders team all together in one place – a new base for the business, which prides itself on taking on even the most challenging jobs.

R

enovations and house levelling have long been a speciality of Bowers Builders. Its team of four builders has 90 years of collective experience in the industry, with owners Johnnie and Amanda directly involved in the management of every project. “We will take on the jobs that are outside the box – nothing is too hard,” Amanda says. She meets all new clients with Johnnie to talk over their specific building situation. “Once we start work on the job, our client's hardest decision should just be choosing the paint colour.”

Clear and honest communication is integral to their business, with all work completed to a very high standard that will last over time. From a new garage floor that is complicated due to land conditions, an almost complete renovation of an inner-city cottage, to demanding hill sites that require helicopter access, Amanda and Johnnie work together to come up with a realistic

solution for all involved. They are well used to working with a range of agencies and specialists such as structural and geotechnical engineers, and have reliable sub-contractors to complete any electrical, plumbing, complex brick work and roofing work. “We say that anything can be done – some things just take longer than others,” Amanda says. Contact Johnnie and Amanda at Bowers Builders on 027 248 0220 or visit www.bowersbuildersltd.co.nz for more information.

“QUALITY FOR OUR TEAM IS ABSOLUTELY PARAMOUNT,” -Richard Trent

SUCCESS SPEAKS FOR ITSELF While many can talk the talk, few can, with credibility and consistency, walk the talk. The real professional gems are, in fact, the businesses that can not only walk the talk, but take the wins in their professional stride with genuine humility.

T

rent Building Solutions could shout its successes from the rooftops of the many homes it has built for Cantabrians, but doesn't favour 'trumpet-blowing'. Its focus, instead, is on delivering high-quality architectural homes for clients who seek out Richard Trent and his team for their lateral thinking, resilience, dedication and efficiency. The business is also earning an eco-friendly reputation for itself as it diversifies its portfolio and moves with the technological times. “Quality for our team is absolutely paramount,” Richard Trent confirms. “We take pride in being able to offer an eco-friendly

twist. A great example of where this focus is taking us is a sixmonth residential build we undertook in Lincoln. For us and our client it was really about building smaller but smarter.” Featuring Calder Stewart solar rib roofing with PV panels discretely placed between the ribs, the house also boasts a wetback fireplace for heating hot water, and thicker walls and highperformance windows allowing for better insulation. “With these building features and well thought-about positioning on site, this house is the ultimate in not only low running costs, but beautiful country elegance and architectural flair,” Trent says. UNEARTHING AUTUMN TREASURES FOR YOUR GARDEN

By Cheryl Colley

I would call myself a pretty keen gardener. I planted a new garden at a new house only a few years ago and have had the immense pleasure of watching it grow and flourish.

A

utumn is a wonderful time in the garden for people like me. It's the chance to fill any gaps in your plantings and have them establish themselves while the soil is still warm and before the cooler weather sets in. The even more wonderful thing for gardeners right now is that nurseries tend to be having their big autumn sales. McSaveneys Nursery, at 57a McSaveneys Road in the tranquil and beautiful rural environment of Marshlands, is no exception. Everything at the nursery is discounted, with 20 to 40 percent off all stock. The benefit of the sale is two-fold. Gardeners have the opportunity to

purchase, for a reduced price, well-sized quality plants that have been grown-on at the nursery during the summer; the nursery is able to reduce its current stock to then replenish during the winter ready for next spring. So whether you are planting a new garden, or revamping an existing one, there is something for everyone in this sale. All the popular choices are available – a large variety of evergreen standards (Portuguese Laurels, Bay Trees, Michelias and Camellias), large and small-grade deciduous trees, shrubs, native plants and many hedging species. Of course there is also the McSaveneys' speciality, the

comprehensive selection of colourful and long-flowering perennials – Salvia, Federation Daisy species, Penstemons, Hydrangeas, Lavenders and a host of others. ideas and it will take great pleasure in talking you through options and helping you develop a planting plan that suits your section and lifestyle. “People often come in with a picture they have found in a magazine or online, saying 'This is what I want'. INNOVATIVE DESIGN IN INNOVATIVE PLACES Versatility in design and use of natural materials is a hallmark of the High Country Homes team. “We can be extremely conservative or wildly inventive _ that just depends on the owner,” High Country Homes Ltd Director, Simon Banks, says.

T

hree current projects epitomise how at ease the team is with contrasting styles, construction techniques and environments. In the Rakaia River Valley, a large modern cedar and glass house is taking shape. “The house roof is supported on a challenging steel structure that will eventually mirror the scree slides on the Mt Hutt Range. This is a very high-calibre build further complicated by the altitude of the location, which includes high winds and snow.” High Country Homes has developed systems and gear for making work in remote places viable. In Tai Tapu, a hunting and fishing guide is seeing his dream of a post and beam-style home become a reality.

“It's styled after a wool shed on the exterior, but the focus on the interior is the post and beam structure of the big central lodge room.” The owner is milling windfall timber himself, which has then been fashioned into the structure by craftsmen from a different region. The 'high country' team is also building in the 'low country'. The site is in the Lincoln rural area and the house is styled after a maimai. It has an 18m x 4.5m high cast in-situ wall and will eventually feature 7m macrocarpa poles. Simon explains that a major part of his job is now design and detailing and making sure that each new aspect is absolutely right. “We admire owners that are slightly adventurous.” High Country Homes works in the country, town or city. THE OUTLOOK'S GOOD FOR WINDOW SOLUTIONS If you're not up close and personal with the perks of great windows and the pitfalls of poor ones, it'd be easy to underestimate just how complicated the whole window malarkey can become if you don't get it right the first time.

F

ortunately for Cantabrians, Martin Ball and his team at NK Windows have functional beauty down to a fine art when it comes to the window industry. And, as Ball explains of his worldclass offering, the windows he manufactures and installs don't just come with an attractive European accent; nor are they just a pretty face. They are, in fact, the future of New Zealand homes.

Martin Ball and his team have functional beauty down to a fine art when it comes to the window industry.

“What is particularly special about the windows we offer is that they utilise a robust profile and hardware from Europe, but benefit from New Zealand expertise too as they are made here,” Ball explains. “The windows are designed to not only thermally perform, but excel, in our weather conditions.” Built with a PVC frame, high-performance glass and superior sealing, Ball extols the

many virtues of the options he has available – from weather-tightness and thermal efficiency to greater home security and maintaining a quiet ambience in the home thanks to noise-resistant materials. Working almost exclusively on the residential scene with a light touch on the commercial front, NK Windows is earning itself a commendable reputation working across renovations, builds and repair projects.

GOOD LOOKS, SMART FENCES Autumn is the ideal time to smarten up your property before winter. Summer holidays are over and you probably have more time to assess what jobs need doing – tidying up the garden, checking the paths and, above all, the security and appearance of your fences.

W

ith an extruded PVC modular fence system from Paragon Fencing, you can have security and also make a stylish statement at your place. This system offers a very low-maintenance alternative to timber fencing that is smart, robust and cost-effective. The material is extremely durable and will not deteriorate, warp, crack or twist, unlike a timber fence. It maintains its straight, fresh and clean good looks year after year and, because the product is pre-finished, there is no painting and little maintenance after installation, saving you time and money. One recent happy customer had this to say: “My wife and I had no doubts about the fencing product we wanted to use. From the first contact to arrange a visit, right up until the project was finished, it was an absolute delight dealing with the team from Paragon. It was a really consultative approach with great communication along the way.”
